Dogs + Medications + English

  • Codeine is used primarily used in dogs, to help manage mild to moderate pain, for cough and for diarrhea. It may also be used in cats.

  • Your veterinarian has prescribed colchicine to help treat chronic liver fibrosis in dogs. Your veterinarian may have chosen this medication for other indications as well.

  • Corticosteroid ear drops are generally used to decrease inflammation, itching and pain. This type of medication may also be used to decrease the amount of wax production in the ear. Corticosteroid medications that are commonly found in topical ear products include hydrocortisone, flucinolone, triamcinolone, betamethasone, and dexamethasone. These medications may be combined with antimicrobials, which are used to treat infections.

  • Corticosteroids are used in the eye to stop inflammation. They are most commonly used to treat conjunctivitis, episcleritis, scleritis, pannus (chronic superficial keratitis), and eosinophilic keratitis of the cat. The most common corticosteroid eye preparations are prednisolone and dexamethasone.

  • Cyclophosphamide is classified as an alkylating agent. It is used for cancer chemotherapy and/ or to suppress the immune system. Cyclophosphamide may also be used for other conditions as determined by your veterinarian.

  • Cyclosporin is an immunosuppressive agent. It is used to treat diseases and disorders caused by an overactive immune system. An ointment for the eye is also available for treating dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Cyclosporin may be used to help heal cracks around the anus (perianal fistulas).

  • Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine that may be used to prevent or control an allergic reaction. This medication may also be used to stimulate a cat’s appetite. Cyproheptadine is useful to relieve allergic symptoms; however, it will not cure the underlying disease. Your veterinarian may prescribe cyproheptadine for other symptoms or problems.

  • Deracoxib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent that is often used to relieve pain and inflammation after orthopedic surgery in dogs. It is also indicated for the treatment of chronic pain and lameness associated with osteoarthritis in dogs.

  • Desmopressin acetate is used to treat diabetes insipidus in dogs and cats.

  • Dexamethasone is a cortisone-like medicine used to treat inflammatory conditions involving the joints and to treat nonspecific skin conditions. There may be other conditions for which your veterinarian may prescribe this medication.
