Cats + Behavior + English

  • Punishment is the application of a stimulus that decreases the chance that a behavior will be repeated. It must be timed to coincide with the undesirable behavior, and must be unpleasant enough to deter the dog from repeating the behavior.

  • The best way to train your pet is through the proper use of positive reinforcement and rewards while simultaneously avoiding punishment. The goal of training is to "learn" the proper task and/or behavior.

  • There is no delicate way to ask, “Why do cats sniff butts?” In order to comprehend why cats sniff rear ends, we first have to understand their sense of smell and their communication techniques.

  • Cats, unlike humans, rarely just plop down in bed. They spend a lot of time preparing their bed before snuggling in for the night.

  • Most of the time cats are a source of amusement, but sometimes they can be a source of embarrassment. One of the more embarrassing things that cats do is to lick their “private” parts in public.

  • While punishment can be effective at decreasing those behaviors that are undesirable (when applied within 1 to 2 seconds), if not administered properly it can aggravate existing problems and cause new ones.
